Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment ("WEEE") Regulations compliance

At MandM, we take environmental concerns extremely seriously. As such, we abide by the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment ("WEEE") Regulations 2013, in addition to relevant EU member states' national laws which implement the WEEE Regulations in their respective countries.

Within our own business, this means that we:

  • fulfil our Duty of Care for the safe handling, storage and disposal of WEEE, identifying every opportunity for recycling or reusing equipment; and
  • contribute financially to the Government-approved Distributor Take-Back Scheme set up by Valpak Retail WEEE Services Limited, which seeks to establish a network of Designated Collection Facilities where WEEE can provided free of charge to the consumer, in order to be recycled and/or managed in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.

For customers, we offer the following advice in respect of any product we sell that falls under the WEEE Regulations:

  • lithium cells, batteries and small electrical appliances charged by either batteries or mains electricity, should never be put into household bins for onward transfer to landfill sites as they may contain hazardous substances which can be injurious to the environment, local wildlife and human health;
  • to dispose of spent lithium cells or batteries, check the rules in your local area. For example, some refuse collection services will collect and recycle old batteries as long as you follow the appropriate guidance. Similarly, many supermarkets have specialist bins where you can deposit batteries intended for recycling;
  • many small electrical appliances will be recycled by your local council / authority or at your local waste facility or specialist recycling centre. Check local websites for information and instruction; and
  • if you have no further use for an electrical appliance but it's still in perfect working condition, then you could donate it to a local charity, but check first that they are happy to accept the item.

For further information on recycling facilities that are local to you, visit https://erp-recycling.org/, then select your country of residence, and search for "where to recycle".
